Are you confused about what kind of ceiling lights you should install in your small bathroom? The size of your space is an important consideration when deciding on both the scale and type of lighting. Choosing large lighting fixtures may overwhelm your space and make it seem cramped. Smaller-scale fixtures are a better option, but ensuring the right amount of light is also paramount.
There are three types of light: ambient, accent, and task. Using each type of light will fully illuminate your space and give you the best lighting for tasks and aesthetics. To select the right type of ceiling lights for a small bathroom you want to consider the amount of light it will provide and the amount of space required for the fixture.
The best types of ceiling lights for a small space are:
- Recessed & Indirect Lighting
- Flush Mount Lights
- Semi-Flush Mount Lights
- Pendant Lights
- Small Chandelier

Recessed & Indirect Lighting
Recessed lighting is a great option for any bathroom, specifically a small one. The lights will help to illuminate the entire room evenly making the space appear larger with fewer shadows. Recessed lighting also doesn’t take up any visual space that could make the room seem smaller.
Indirect lighting can be seen in the photo above, below the bathtub, and around the crown molding. This type of lighting can be achieved by using LED light strips and is great for a small bathroom to add additional lighting without taking up space. The dim ambient lighting it produces works well as a nightlight or in the evening.

Flush & Semi-Flush Mount Lighting
Flush and semi-flush mount ceiling lights are an excellent choice for a small bathroom. The fixtures are flush with the ceiling and take up very little vertical space, leaving an unobstructed view. This will illuminate your space without overwhelming it.
The only difference between the two lights is that semi-flush hangs down slightly lower than flush mount lights. Both are still great options for a small bathroom as neither is overly large for the space.
Flush and semi-flush mount lights do require other forms of additional lighting. Adding recessed, indirect lighting, or wall lights will assist with lighting the entire space and provide task lighting for activities.

Pendant Lights
Pendant lights are a great ceiling light option for task lighting! Pendant lights placed around a sink or mirror can illuminate the space for activities such as washing or grooming. Smaller pendant lights work well in a tiny space as they take up minimal space, while still providing ample light.

Chandeliers
Last on the list is chandeliers. Although they can work in a small space, you must be mindful of the measurements. A bathroom with a low ceiling may not have the vertical space required for a chandelier, but if ceiling height is not an issue a small chandelier could work well in a compact bathroom.
